Portugal, inserido na região Mediterrânea, é um dos poucos países europeus que integram um hotspot de biodiversidade, existindo várias espécies - como o Lince-ibérico, a Abetarda, o Sisão, a Águia-de-Bonelli e o Penereiro-das-torres - que se encontram com estatuto de ameaça.
